It started like any other good rain storm. That was on Tuesday. By Wednesday night it was overflowing in the streets, and in the campground.
The Fort Lauderdale area reported 25.6 inches (650 mm) of rain within approximately 12 hours.
While having fun at Manor Lanes on league night none of us were aware of what was going on outside. We soon learned when driving home, dodging flooded streets and swamped cars.
I almost made it home that night… almost. In Easterlin Park I was driving through the narrow, flooded road towards our camp site. As I neared our site I could see a wall of water climbing up the hood of my car. No stopping now. I kept going. Just one more corner and I am there. Then I saw it. A white car was abondoned in front of me! Nothing to do but stop. At that point I could feel the cold, wet water at my feet. I grabbed my phone and wallet and opened the door. Water came pouring in. Nothing to do now but wade home and see how the RV was.
Mary, the cats and the RV were all safe. The water went up the tail pipes but it started and ran fine. What a relief!!
One week later and the car was saved. Thanks to the heroic efforts from the team at Adamo Auto Repair in Oakland Park. After towing the car in they saved the engine, repaired the electrical system and got our air conditioning going again. John, James, JR and everyone there did a great job!
The car will never be the same, nor will we after that experience.
